Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT) is a global technology company supplying the equipment, services and software that enable the manufacture of semiconductor chips for electronics, flat panel displays for computers, smartphones and televisions, and solar products.
The problem was one of distribution as much as scale. Applied Materials needed a high-performance database that could run inside globally distributed customer sites and capture the IoT data generated by its manufacturing equipment, feeding critical manufacturing process control and analytics.
Applied Materials hired RhinoSource to advise executive leadership and their technical team on horizontally-scalable NoSQL data architectures — DataStax Cassandra, MongoDB and Oracle NoSQL among them — as cost-effective alternatives to the traditional monolithic database architectures they had been considering for those globally distributed IoT data collection systems.
RhinoSource then assisted with the evaluation and vendor selection process, which brought in the DataStax, Oracle and KX KDB+ teams.
