eBay Product Catalog DataStax Cassandra Peak Period Support

Cassandra & DataStax

eBay is a global e-commerce leader offering an online auction and e-commerce platform that enables people and businesses to buy and sell goods and services on its websites and mobile apps.

eBay uses DataStax Enterprise Cassandra to house its massive, highly-categorized product item catalog — hundreds of millions of product items transacted by its customers, organized so buyers can find what they are looking for.

DataStax brought RhinoSource into eBay to provide onsite support and Cassandra performance troubleshooting during the seasonal peak online traffic period, when the DataStax clusters are under the most stress. That timing is the point: RhinoSource analyzed the production systems in real time, while they were being maximally loaded, and documented the issues as they surfaced rather than reconstructing them afterwards.

RhinoSource investigated and identified the root cause of latency issues across the 12 sharded DataStax Enterprise clusters housing the catalog — an imbalanced number of connections per cluster. We reviewed the overall DataStax architecture and the application code, recommended tuning adjustments and keyspace replication changes to correct the imbalance, and made DataStax Java driver code change recommendations to improve overall read performance.
