Element Fleet Vehicle Telematics DataStax Production Readiness Review

Element Fleet is the largest fleet management company in North America, with global reach. It provides comprehensive fleet management that delivers economies of scale and insight improving the financial and operational value of vehicle fleets worldwide.

Element Fleet chose DataStax Enterprise Cassandra, Solr Search, Spark Analytics and DSE Graph for the ingestion and storage of real-time IoT data streams — vehicle telematics, weather and traffic data — powering its telematics and fleet management analytics services.

In preparation for go-live, DataStax brought RhinoSource into Element Fleet to run a health checkup and review the DataStax Enterprise Cassandra, Solr Search and Spark Analytics use cases, architecture, data models, configurations and cluster management operations, confirming the platform was ready to carry a production launch.

RhinoSource made the tuning and operational recommendations needed to bring Element's DataStax Enterprise implementation in line with best practices.

We also helped the Element team optimize data batch loading performance while maintaining cross-datacenter consistency, and set out best practices for handling batch job failures and reloads. That included monitoring and alerting recommendations using OpsCenter to keep clusters stable through the heavy batch write workloads, which is where an under-tuned cluster tends to give first.

Finally, RhinoSource provided advice and sample code for handling retry scenarios across both streaming ingests and bulk loads.
