HERE Technologies Global Location Metadata DataStax Architecture Review

HERE Technologies is a global provider of digital mapping, location data and related automotive services to individual consumers and businesses.

HERE uses Cassandra as a high-performance metadata index within the HERE location data platform. A metadata index sits in front of everything else, so its latency budget is the platform's latency budget.

DataStax brought RhinoSource onsite to HERE for a deep dive into the DataStax Enterprise Cassandra deployment — confirming best practices were being followed and recommending how to better manage the DataStax environments so SLAs would be met.

RhinoSource reviewed HERE's existing DataStax architecture, cluster configurations, security settings, use cases, query patterns and Cassandra data model, then made detailed tuning recommendations to improve consistency, performance and stability against stringent multi-tenant high-availability and latency SLAs — and to head off problems before they surfaced.

We also reviewed HERE's cluster operational procedures and recommended ways to streamline cluster maintenance and disaster recovery, including using DataStax OpsCenter for monitoring, automated backup and restore, and ongoing cluster repair.

Finally, RhinoSource provided guidelines for using Docker within DataStax Enterprise production and development environments, including the configuration approaches that prevent data being lost when containers are removed.
