U.S. Postal Service

USPS Informed Visibility DataStax Cassandra Support

Cassandra & DataStax

The U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 160 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. With more than 34,000 retail locations, USPS operates one of the world's largest computer networks and delivers 48 percent of the world's mail.

Informed Visibility Mail Tracking & Reporting is the USPS single source for near real-time letter and flat mail tracking information, used by businesses tracking domestic-bound barcoded letters, flats, bundles, handling units and containers. The load on it is not constant — it peaks, hard, at exactly the moment failure is least acceptable.

RhinoSource was brought in by DataStax to analyze multiple large-scale DataStax Enterprise Cassandra and Solr Search clusters housing an enormous amount of data for this high-volume system, confirming the clusters were healthy and could handle the significantly increased loads of the peak holiday season. RhinoSource made detailed recommendations to improve cluster performance and address the issues identified.

RhinoSource also helped with plans to upgrade DataStax software at USPS and to migrate workloads onto a new generation of server hardware with zero downtime, and helped load test production-like workloads on DataStax Astra DBaaS.
